Abstract

It is a qualitative research study, exploratory in nature, held at a teaching maternity hospital in the municipality

of Curitiba, Paraná State/Brazil in 2007. The objectives were: to verify if non-pharmacological pain relief care is provided by

the nursing team to the patient in labor, and to identify which non-pharmacological care techniques are proposed to the

woman in labor by the nursing team. By using a semi-structured instrument, it was held a participant observation of a

nursing team and postpartum interviews with 10 women. As a result, women performed at least one of the techniques,

encouraged by the team, such as: massage, bath, deambulation, birth ball. By analyzing the results, it was verified that the

team is promoting care according to humanizing delivery manuals.
