Abstract

Objective: To investigate the self-care of people with asthma in light of Dorothea Orem's Theory.

Method: Qualitative study conducted between June and July 2024 in the city of Recife-PE, using a semi-structured script; 15 people with asthma followed in an outpatient clinic were interviewed, and their responses were transcribed, categorized, and analyzed using Bardin's content analysis, with the help of ATLAS.ti software.

Results: 192 codes were identified, leading to three categories: asthma, factors related to the daily living activities of people with asthma, and self-care of people with asthma.

Final considerations: The self-care of people with asthma reveals that health education plays a fundamental role in strengthening autonomy, managing the disease, and improving quality of life.
