Cardiovascular illnesses are serious health setbacks, being responsible for several hospital admissions. This study objectified to check patients’ knowledge on risk factors related to cardiovascular illnesses. It featured a transversal quantitative approach, entailing 50 admitted patients in a medium-sized hospital in the city of Pelotas-RS, from November/2006 to January/2007. We observed that 62% of the interviewees knew the risk factors for cardiovascular illnesses, being the lipid diet (26%), the most mentioned as contributor for their illness. Thus, we highlight the need for permanent qualification of already-existent preventive programs, according to the population profile, emphasizing health education towards the diseased person in order to contribute for minimizing occurrences and even re-incidence of cardiovascular illnesses.
