This study aimed to characterize the potential health risks identified on routes of healing and care observed and described by communitarian health agents working in Barra do Rio, Balneário Camboriú Santa Catarina State/ Brazil. We developed a qualitative approach adapted from ethnography and case study methodologies. We identified several routes of healing and care involving different health systems, each one bearing specific potential risks for health. Thus, this study provides information that may be helpful for health workers to stimulate patients autonomy and selfcaring as well as to inform these patients about potential health risks on the itineraries they may take, even if these dont include the formal health system.
