Abstract

This article undertakes a critical investigation of the origins of political violence that arise from revanchist thinking. It adopts as its initial point of departure a case study of the ideological crisis that arose in the Japanese Brazilian community in the immediate post-World War II era, notably through the framework presented in Fernando Morais' Dirty Hearts ([2001] 2014). Although the extremist activity of the militant group Shindō Renmei has often been ascribed to particularities in Imperial Japan or within the prewar immigrant community in Brazil, this study contends that revanchism is instead an integral feature of modern political culture that has of late explicitly re-emerged in contemporary neo-fascist populist movements through the common use of secret societies, propaganda (fake news) and conspiracy theories. Accordingly, it is imperative to apply comparative methods to locate and diagnose the root causes of revanchism in moments of collective expropriation.
