Abstract

Nowadays the world is rapidly and continuously changing, and is becoming increasingly "technologized" or "digitalized" (Lankshear; Knobel, 2003, p. 155). The contact between  cultures of different  parts of the world is becoming increasingly possible and frequent (Lemke, 1998). The presence of different cultures in our own country and in our own community is also increasingly evident. How can we track changes in our society in the face of new technologies? What is the role of schools in the education of individuals in this new world? What does it mean to be a citizen in today's world? What is the role of public schools in education for citizenship? How can teaching  a foreign language (FL) interfere in this process? These and other issues will be  discussed here based on  the notions of  cultural diversity, globalization / localization, and theories of critical literacy.
