URBAN ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY BASED ON LAND COVER:
CASE STUDY OF SÃO BORJA – BRAZIL

Urban environmental quality is a fundamental issue in an increasingly urbanized world. One of the ways to assess environmental quality is by surveying land cover, as this provides important information about the structure of the landscape, which allows inferences to be made about its dynamics, fundamental information for understanding environmental quality. This study sought to evaluate the urban environmental quality of the municipality of São Borja (Brazil) based on the survey and analysis of land cover and subsequent inferences about the dynamics of the landscape. Therefore, satellite images from the year 2022 made available by Google Satellites directly in the QGis software were used. Mapping occurred non-automatically and at a scale of 1:3,500. Based on the land cover survey, has possible to identify that the environmental quality in around 85% of the urban area of São Borja (Brazil) can be considered high. This quality is associated with vegetation coverage (herbaceous, shrubby and arboreal), as well as buildings of up to four floors with vegetated surroundings. There are, however, areas, such as the downtown, the south and the east, that concentrate coverage that leads to a reduction in environmental quality, such as buildings with up to four floors with waterproof surroundings, buildings above four floors or even large permeable buildings, or not by vegetation. It is concluded that the urban environmental quality of São Borja for the year 2022 based on land cover can be considered high.
