Paper bombs: the role of Paraná’s law students in the 1932 Civil War

The purpose of this study is to reconstruct the history of the participation of law students at the Faculty of Law of Paraná in the Brazilian Civil War of 1932. Analyzing the press at the time, the memory of some of the participants and the flow of queries and loans from the Faculty’s library, the research: rescued the daily life and legal culture of Curitiba in the early 1930s; identified the main debates on constitutionalism in the state of Paraná; rescued the main authors, and borrowed and debated books; narrated and problematized the participation of these students in the conflict as members of the Academic Caravan of Paraná and, later, as enlisted in the 9th Battalion of Reserve Hunters. It was identified that the Civil War of 1932 was an important milestone for the Brazilian constitutional debates and a watershed in the public memory of the participation of law bachelors in national politics. Thus, it demonstrates the pressing need for new research focused on legal history that fulfills and problematizes the relationship between law, civil war and constitutional culture in Brazil.
