Abstract

Today it is very important that westudy human rights – its juridical construction andprotection – taking into account alterity as ananalytical instrument. It is necessary to be aware ofthe risks involved in the reductionist perspectivesabout any reality: cultural, ethnical, racial or areligious one. This kind of reductionism put us indanger of ethnocentrism and a limited comprehensionabout cultural diversity and reality. Theunderstanding about our culture is only possiblethrough the understanding of other cultures. Thecomprehension of the other leads to the knowledgeof that our culture is only one possibility amongothers. Through the other’s recognition we canavoid the sense of racial, economics or politicalsuperiority. In this paper we present Lévinas andDerrida’s perspectives of the other and the self (aface-to-face relation) in order to re-think humanrights in the contemporaries societies.
