This research seeks to contribute to the theoretical and technical deepening of electoral observation as a necessary tool in the evaluation of international standards regarding the quality of democracies in the region. The objective is to identify the role of Electoral Observation Missions (EOM) in Latin America, through an analysis of the democratic situation in the region and the presentation of case studies of electoral observation in selected countries. Initially, the state of democracy is analyzed, followed by the identification of the missions carried out between 2019 and 2023, in Latin American countries and ends with the demonstration of the roles they developed, from the electoral processes, according to different democratic variables. Finally, a research agenda is proposed from the perspective of political science, for the strengthening of electoral observation mechanisms.
