Senegalese immigration to Brazil and France: race, representation and media discourses
DOI:
https://doi.org/10.5380/cg.v10i1.77789Abstract
This article analyzes how different media sources characterize the immigration of Senegalese individuals towards Brazil and France. It aims to study the discourse adopted by local media, specifically print media, in the process of denoting and presenting contemporary immigration within these two different societies. The hypothesis of this investigation is that the Brazilian and French media label Senegalese immigration through a discriminatory discourse, based on racial, religious and/or sexual prejudices. Towards that end, a discourse analysis research method was employed on approximately 100 individual news pieces from Brazilian and French newspapers between 2010-2020, to examine how these media discourses are similar/different from each other. This article concludes that immigration remains a contested process in these two countries, subject to the effect of historical legacies such as slavery and colonialism.
Keywords: Senegalese immigration; Media discourses; Brazil; France.
