Abstract

In Paraná, 2,800 cases of meningitis are reported annually. This study aimed to: describe the epidemiological profile of the meningitis cases notified and confirmed in the municipality of Ponta Grossa – Parana State/Brazil and to analyze the mortality rate of this disease per year, between 2001 and 2005. The epidemiological data were collected from Sinan database at the 3rd Paraná State Health Regional. The variables selected were sex, age, race/skin color, prior-existent illnesses, meningitis type, evolution of the case and sequels. Among 401 notified cases, there was a predominance of males, children under 9 years of age, white race, absence of prior-existent illnesses and sequels. Viral etiology was the most frequent, with the mortality rate ranging from 5.39% to 17.24%. Meningitis monitoring is indispensable in order to subsidize the adoption of control measures, fast diagnosis, and early treatment.
