An Anthropological Perspective on Angolan Middle Classes or What We Fail to Overcome from Colonialism

Drawing on Auerbach's sensory experience as presented throughout her work, this essay
aims to interpret the realities faced by her interlocutors as phenomena inherited from the colonial violence that occurred in Angola. The essay is divided into three sections. The first part seeks to understand how becoming a middle class in Angola reproduces, to some extent, the continuation of the civilizing process in the post-colonial world, particularly by considering the techniques of bodily socialization. The subsequent section explores the experience of living in the ruins of colonialism and wild capitalism, a term dear to the author. Finally, the essay delves into the need for a profound and self-reflexive examination of our bodies in the field.
