Ernesto de Martino: the anthropological “vocation” of a religions historian

To elaborate the concept of the crisis of presence, Martino must submit the Christian paradigm of original sin and the finitude of human history to a systematic and differentiated comparison. From a philosophical perspective, this operation enables him to make existentialism and historicism compatible, while from a historical viewpoint, it permits him to contemplate the diverse religious forms of salvation from the immanence of cultural transcendence through values. Thus, awareness of the crisis and salvation opens a path to anthropological questions about the possible ends of cultures and the implicit entropy of thought.
