This study analyses scientific publications dealing with the training of footballers for sporting excellence. The systematic review method was used to examine national and international scientific articles published between 2001 and 2023 in journals indexed in the Portal of Journals of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES). 232 studies stood out for the dialogue in question, which were grouped into eleven categories due to the heterogeneity of the works. The observations indicate that the main objective of football training is the financial and sporting balance of clubs, as well as the return on investments made by market agents in the football industry. This is to the detriment of meeting the broader human needs of young developing athletes. The main methodological contribution is the use of categories of analysis to support the understanding, assimilation and synthesis of the available debate on the subject.
