An analysis of the pre-coverage of COP30 in Mato Grosso news portals from the perspective of climate justice

Abstract

This article analyzes how news portals in Mato Grosso discursively construct COP30 in their pre-coverage, from the perspective of climate justice (Milanez & Fonseca, 2010). It applies framing theory (Entman, 1993) in dialogue with the concepts of event (França, 2014), necropolitics (Mbembe, 2018), and coloniality (Mignolo, 2017). A qualitative analysis was conducted on 20 news reports published between January and June 2025. Results indicate that, although hosting COP30 in the Legal Amazon carries symbolic significance, the regional coverage is shaped by discursive power structures, limiting its potential to foster a critical public opinion based on climate justice. The study concludes that local journalism must broaden voices and narratives, encouraging debate on socio-environmental and epistemological inequalities in Mato Grosso.
