The Idea for a Universal History with a Cosmopolitan Aim shows a relatively large use of “disposition” [Anlage], a concept that, also shared by the then future biology, appears in this text with a clear philosophical meaning. In this article, I examine some positions regarding this expression, put forward a hypothesis about the origin of Kant’s copious use of it, as well as analyze the first three theses of the Idea, the nucleus that configures a set of assumptions of this entire pamphlet.
