Este artigo apresenta parte da história de vida de Dona Joana, líder religiosa na Ilha de Maré, em Salvador (BA). O objetivo é refletir sobre a pesquisa, com destaque para a técnica da observação participante e a ferramenta da entrevista, durante o trabalho de campo. A narrativa é um relato parcial da pesquisa para o curso de Mestrado em Estudos Étnicos e Africanos com a construção do pesquisador e as dificuldades surgidas nas atividades. Esta abordagem etnográfica sinaliza a importância de rever o método a ser aplicado numa atividade empírica diante de surpresas.
