The goal of this study was to make a comprehensive and unsystematic review of the Brazilian literature on the topic of mental health in childhood, from 1995 to 2006. The review was based on abstract’s analysis found in LILACS and INDEXPSI databases. Different descriptors were used in order to ensure a reasonable overview of the production. First, the abstracts were classified according to the following categories: publication type, year, field, production type, the theoretical approach and methodology. Then, the abstracts were submitted to a content analysis, resulting in these categories: causes/antecedents/risk factors, assessment/diagnosis, validation tests and instruments, prevention studies, intervention, pharmacotherapy, neurologic/genetic understanding, psychoanalytical/ psychosocial understanding, ego functions studies, familiar/context aspects, comorbidity, epidemiological aspects and others. A total of 1102 abstracts were analyzed, being computed and categorized 479, according to the criteria. There were more abstracts in the keywords “children autism”, followed by “domestic violence” and “depression and children”. Most abstracts were classified in these categories: assessment/diagnosis, psychoanalytical/psychosocial intervention and understanding.
Keywords: mental health; children; literature review.
