Human creativity in the East and in the West: Analysis of historical-conceptual roots

Abstract

Creativity is discussed and studied around the world, even though there is no consensual definition of the term in the academic area. Given that the creative phenomenon is interactive and context-dependent, different cultures define, stimulate and recognize it differently. A definition shared by several American authors describes innovation and appropriateness as characteristics inherent to creativity; whereas, among Chinese authors, morality stands out as an essential attribute. The purpose of this article was to analyze the historical roots of the study of creativity, derived from the predecessor concepts of divine creativity in the West and from natural creativity in the East, pointing possible influences to current conceptions and researches. Although the importance of culture has been recognized in studies of creativity since the 1970s, it is still underestimated, especially when the psychometric definition and North American instruments are used to measure the creativity of citizens of various nationalities. The historiometric and systems perspectives are pointed as theoretical-methodological options that recognize creativity as a social phenomenon and may be more suitable for intercultural investigations.

Possui graduação em Psicologia pelo Centro Universitário de Brasília (2009), especialização em Gestão de Pessoas e Coaching pelo Centro Universitário de Brasília (2012) e MBA em Gestão de Negócios pelo IBMEC (2015). Mestre em Processos do Desenvolvimento Humano e Saúde pela Universidade de Brasília (2017). Atuou como psicóloga no atendimento especializado ao aluno com características de Altas Habilidades/Superdotação da Secretaria da Educação do Distrito Federal. Atualmente dedica-se às atividades de pesquisa, ensino e extensão na área de Psicologia do Desenvolvimento Humano, com ênfase em criatividade, multiculturalismo e altas habilidades.

Denise de Souza Fleith, Universidade de Brasília

Possui graduação em Psicologia pela Universidade de Brasília (1985), mestrado em Psicologia pela Universidade de Brasília (1990), doutorado em Psicologia Educacional pela University of Connecticut (1999). Realizou pós-doutorado no National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth (University of Warwick) (2005) e na Universidade do Minho (2014). Atualmente é professora titular do Departamento de Psicologia Escolar e do Desenvolvimento do Instituto de Psicologia da Universidade de Brasília. É orientadora de mestrado e doutorado no Programa de Pós-graduação em Processos de Desenvolvimento Humano e Saúde. Foi professora visitante na University of Connecticut, em 2009, e realizou estágio sênior na Universidade do Minho, em Portugal, nos anos de 2009 e 2012. Atuou como editora associada da revista Psicologia: Teoria e Pesquisa no período de 2010 a 2012 e tutora do Programa de Educação Tutorial (PET) da Psicologia na Universidade de Brasília entre 2003 e 2005. Membro do Executive Committee (2013-2015), Vice-presidente (Agosto 2015 a Fevereiro 2017) e Presidente (Fevereiro a Julho 2017) of the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children. Suas áreas de interesse são criatividade no contexto escolar, medidas de criatividade, processos de ensino-aprendizagem, desenvolvimento de talentos e superdotação e psicologia escolar. Membro do Grupo de Trabalho Psicologia Escolar e Educacional da Associação Nacional de Pesquisa e Pós-graduação em Psicologia (ANPEPP).
