A FOLHA DE SÃO PAULO E O “PAÍS DO FUTEBOL”: NARRATIVAS JORNALÍSTICAS DA NAÇÃO E O DEBATE DE 1997 SOBRE O FUTEBOL BRASILEIRO

Resumo

O artigo analisa a participação do jornal Folha de São Paulo na discussão sobre a modernização do futebol brasileiro transcorrida em 1997. Utiliza como material de análise a série de reportagens denominada País do futebol e artigos de colunistas fixos do jornal, objetivando captar como se posicionou editorial e politicamente o periódico de maior circulação nacional a respeito de um modelo para o futebol brasileiro. Esses discursos são tratados como narrativas da nacionalidade produzidas no âmbito do jornalismo esportivo. Isto porque os textos, quando descrevem o que seria a realidade do esporte nacional, reportam imagens do Brasil que se tem e daquele que se deseja. Plenas, portanto, de descrições valoradas da nação.

The Folha de São Paulo and the Football Country: journalistic tales of the nation and the 1997 discussion about Brazilian football

Abstract

This article analyses how the newspaper Folha de São Paulo participated in the discussion about modernization in the Brazilian soccer occurred in 1997. Reporting series named País do futebol and articles of fixed columnists of the diary are used as research material, to capture the editorial and political position of the larger circulation Brazilian newspaper about a model for Brazilian soccer. These discourses are treated as nationality narrations constructed by sportive journalism, because the texts, while describing the presumed reality of the national sport, report images of Brazil that is and that want to be, all of them valued descriptions of the nation.
