Abstract

This paper analyzes the influence of German intellectuals in Chile
around the turn of the 20th Century. At that time, Germany was a
scientific and military educational model for the rest of the world, and we discuss here how Chile tried to adopt this model. First, this paper
deals with how the circulation of knowledge, practices and intellectuals
took place between the two countries. Second, this article discusses how
the interest shown by some Chilean intellectuals in Germany created
a series of disputes and discussions about Europe’s civilizing role in
Chile. In this respect, the controversies of the embrujamiento alemán
are analyzed, as a set of questions about the value of Germanic cultures
in a country with Latin roots.
