Towards the conclusion of the civil-military dictatorship in Argentina (1976-1983), there was a notable relaxation in censorship regulations, which enabled the advent of new voices in the public sphere. In this context, El Porteño magazine commenced publication on a monthly basis, thereby reflecting the cultural transformations that were occurring at that time. The magazine addressed a range of topics, including drugs, dissident sexualities and aspects of rock culture. This publication provided a platform for the denouncement of the dictatorship's crimes and offered support to human rights organisations engaged in the pursuit of justice. Concurrently, El Porteño adopted a stance in opposition to the prevailing media narrative aligned with the regime. This article analyses a series of articles and interviews published in the magazine between 1982 and 1987, with a particular focus on the conceptual frameworks employed to understand the crimes perpetrated by the state during the dictatorship. We argue that during the final years of the dictatorship and the early years of democracy, there was no uniformity in the expression of a concern to reflect on lived experiences. Instead, this concern was not expressed in a uniform manner with regard to the past and the present. This conceptualisation, shaped by the framework of the Shoah and the paradigm of the Second World War, provided a fertile ground for reflection on the crimes committed and their perpetrators, as evidenced in the publication.
