This article intends to problematize the progressive presence of the State in the field of health in Bahia between the 1930s and 1950s. In this period, worker health gains relevance, even in a society still distant from the urban and industrial development verified in São Paulo and in Rio de Janeiro. The tensions, conflicts and political interests at stake, health models and the way in which the social security system was formed in Bahia will be discussed in this text. For that, the official documentation was examined, as were the newspapers in circulation at the time.
