Abstract

This article compares and analyses two brasilian prisional realities in the 1920s, 30s and 40s. The first one was used by the police as a suport to Vargass authoritarian regime. The second one, was the Carandiru, model as a prison and openned in the 1920s. For both realities, there is a critical point of view to many analises that are mainly concerned about the habitability of the prisions, ignoring the phisical deterioration aspects of a total institution and its sences of non-humanity and intolerance.
