Abstract

This papers stars with a discussion of the theoretical issues for thestudy of identity in ancient world. Then, after introducing a discussion of social theory and different interpretative standpoints, the papers emphasizes the importance of using a variety of sources: literary, iconography and archaeological. It also includes the analysis of an important numismatics material kept in the National Historical Museum, which refers to the contacts between Romans and Germans in the Late Antiquity.
