Abstract

The aim of this paper is to map Chinese capital exports to the Venezuelan economy between 2001 and 2021, identifying the sectors of production in which Chinese investments were allocated in Venezuela. Since China does not fully participate in Western financial transparency systems, we used information collected, organized and analyzed through AidData’s Global Chinese Official Finance Dataset, as well as an extensive review of specialized literature to validate the records. The main hypothesis to be investigated is that Chinese loans have created a dual economy in transition in Venezuela: on the one hand, a market economy in collapse, especially due to international sanctions and fluctuations in the price of oil; on the other, a domestic economy, subsidized by the state, in full growth. The comple description of the underreported  financial flows can be accessed here: https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.29367473.v1
