Abstract

In our daily work, close to people that experience mental disease, we see that this is understood by the group in several ways and etiologies. Aiming to understand this subject, this study objectifies to identify the psychotic patients´ perceptions on mental disease. A qualitative methodology was used, and their life background was used as instrument of data collection. The four subjects interviewed tell their histories in a fragmented nonchronological way, having the mental disease as their arrival point. In the analysis of the obtained data we apprehended the following categories: the mental disease as suffering, as loneliness, as difficulty and as description/presence of symptoms. The mental disease continues to be a continent to be discovered, and it is the treatment and psychiatric nursing task to value the patients world of meanings, helping them find rehabilitating ways.
