Abstract

Reflecting on the context in which nursing is undertaken, where scientific knowledge and new technologies do little to meet the needs of people requiring care, we believe that it is relevant for the nursing professional to become familiar with and develop skills in the use of nursing care instruments relating to citizenship, the quest for rights, service quality and the return to care provided from a complex and humanistic viewpoint. There are many instruments that can and should be used in nursing to provide humanised care: observation, creativity, scientific curiosity, communication, patient listening, friendliness, empathy, good humour, interaction, the body, the therapeutic touch, emotional care, a humanitarian approach, solidarity, sensitivity, techniques, and the psychosocial and psychospiritual dimensions. In this study we reflect on these instruments of care and conclude that the care we provide as nurses reflects what we are and what we think, and our client is the object of our care, which will also reflect on what we are as his or her carers.
