Abstract

This article is a qualitative descriptive study. Its primary objective is to identify the nursing team knowledge

concerning the gerontogeriatric care to chronic renal failure elderly patients in hemodialytic treatment. The data were

collected from January to March 2007, through semi-structured interview and they were analyzed by descriptive statistic

and the technique of collective subject speech. Out of 21 participants, 12 (57.1%) reported previous experience with elderly

patients and 9 (42.9%) reported not to have care practices with aged patients. Three main ideas emerged from the qualitative

analysis: characterization of the elderly patients by chronological age, immediate and standard care, and knowledge

restricted to the elderly speech. It can be concluded that the knowledge system of the nursing team does not show the

particularity of the caring for aged patients. The focus is directed to hemodialytic treatment routines, technical and

fisiological problems.
