Abstract

In our country, the change of paradigm towards Mental Health care is the result of the Psychiatric Reform, which is lined up with the anti-mental institutions movement. This movement, originated in the 1980s, currently sponsors, among other initiatives, the celebration of the National Anti-Mental Institutions Day on May 18th. This study aims to identify the meanings of that celebration by documental review. Newspaper articles, published by "Estado de Minas" newspaper during the week of May 18th (from 1998 to 2007) were the research source. The data were processed according to the method of the Discourse of the Collective Subject. It was evidenced that the parade of the National Anti-Mental Institutions Day in the city of Belo Horizonte (Brazil) means: social movement, popular celebration and change of paradigm, therefore it represents an important strategy and significance in the Psychiatric Reform.
