Abstract

In the beginning of the twentieth century, the Jewish communities which had just settled in cities like Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo had to deal with Jewish prostitution. The presence of the undesirables among the local population challenged the image that the Jews wanted to give (of a peaceful, orderly and morally correct people) as a means to facilitate their integration into the national society. The article deals with the motivations that led young Jewish girls, mostly from Eastern Europe, to prostitution, their presence in Brazil and the strategies used by the Jewish communities in the creation of symbolic frontiers between pures and impures, avoiding therefore misunderstandings by the Gentiles.
