Between Reason and Practice: the cinta-larga system in contemporary Amazon

Abstract

Stimulated by transactions with loggers and miners, the last decades have seen dramatic changes in the lives of the Cinta-Larga, a society of Tupi-Mondé speakers living in the southern Amazon region. The present article explores the hypothesis that these changes can be understood in terms of a cultural model or system structured by asymmetrical and unequal reciprocity whose “cannibal logic” converts outside beings and qualities into values for its operations. The ethnographic observation, however, confronts a contemporary environment of high complexity – urban nuclei, transportations, mercantile nets and illicit activities, financial mediations, state apparatuses, communications and varied technological devices. The application of the notion of auto-referring systems, developed by Niklas Luhmann, suggests a stimulant and innovative perspective.
