Abstract

This article deals with the transformation of the statute of indigenous chieftainships which occurred in the second half of eighteenth century as a consequence of the introduction of the law of the Directory of the Indians. This law had for objective the regulation of the freedom granted to the Indians in June 6th of 1755. It also intended to constitute a project of civilization of the aboriginal populations of the Amazonian Valley. In this sense, the processes of recruitment of those populations led to alterations in the nature of the indigenous chieftainships which from being constituted in relation to traditional processes and values started to be constructed by means of the Indians insertion in the colonial society of the Valley and also in its hierarchy.
