Este artigo constitui um comentário sobre uma experiência etnográfica e as conseqüências da circulação da escritura em árabe no norte de Moçambique. Esta dupla abordagem, ao mesmo tempo autorreferencial e descritiva, permitirá dar conta de um universo sócio-cultural no qual o Islã ocupa um lugar especial nas práticas e representações de um amplo grupo de pessoas. Ao mesmo tempo, buscarei identificar as causas e conseqüências dos conflitos internos que vêm surgindo no seio da comunidade muçulmana de Moçambique que, por sua vez, dizem respeito às relações que as diferentes vertentes do Islã local teceram com a administração portuguesa durante o período colonial.
