Entre a vida e a morte: David Webster (1945-1989), ativismo e antropologia na África Austral

Este artigo examina a vida e a obra do antropólogo e ativista sul-africano David Webster, destacando as tensões entre a prática da antropologia acadêmica e o ativismo político em um contexto de repressão. Reconhecido como um dos mais promissores antropólogos da África do Sul durante o regime do apartheid, Webster teve sua carreira interrompida tragicamente com seu assassinato em 1989. Este evento, um entre os muitos acontecimentos violentos dos últimos anos do regime segregacionista, estimulou na década seguinte debates sobre o papel da antropologia em tempos de opressão política e desafios éticos. Por meio de uma análise biográfica, do mapeamento das repercussões sobre sua morte, da avaliação crítica de sua tese de doutorado – publicada postumamente em português –, o artigo explora como sua trajetória acadêmica e política foi interpretada na comunidade antropológica e como sua obra continua relevante para compreender questões atuais. Argumenta-se que a reavaliação de sua trajetória contribui para a história da antropologia, ao abordar eventos críticos às vezes marginalizados no campo. Adicionalmente, analisa-se como o renascimento de sua pesquisa sobre a população chope oferece novas possibilidades em áreas específicas da disciplina, como no caso de pesquisas no sul de Moçambique, onde seu legado permanece especialmente significativo.
