Guidelines for deposit, access and use of research data: proposal based on the analysis of international university data repositories

Introduction: This study analyzes the policies Research Data Repositories (RDPs) in international universities, with the aim of proposing guidelines for Brazilian initiatives. Method: investigates the guidelines regarding permissions, restrictions and licenses for deposit, access and data use from the policies of the repositories of 18 international universities. Results: it was found that in most policies, the deposit of data is conditioned to an institutional link; access to data is open, although there may be restrictions related to data typology or legal issues; the licenses attributed for data use are Creative Commons; there is a recommendation for anonymization for sensitive data; the possibility of data embargo is identified in most policies; all policies analyzed indicate some kind of user responsibility regarding the use of research data and regarding the use of the services of the repositories. Conclusion: the existence and publication of policies adopted by repositories provide security and reliability.
