Abstract

Sixty-six samples of water obtained from different origins were analysed for the determination of total and faecal coliforms, as well as mesophilie microrganisms. These samples were collected from eleven public school in residential areas, of which 33 were drinking fountains used by the students and 33 were drinking fountains used by the teachers. The filtering membrane method was used from the coliforms and the standard counting in Petri dishes was used for the mesophilic microrganisms. The results revealed that all, samples (100%) showed contamination by total coliforms and mesophilic microrganisms and 27 samples (40.9%) were contaminated by faecal coliforms. It can be concluded that the water used by both students and teachers was unsuitable for consumption according to the present Brazilian Legislation and also that its consumption can be a health risk for its consumers.
