Abstract

The practice of basketball in open public spaces represents a relevant sociocultural phenomenon. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of a group of players who practice basketball on Sundays in an Open Public Space in Curitiba, using the 5Es analytical model, proposed by Marchi Júnior (2015). The qualitative and descriptive research used semi-structured interviews, the data from which were analyzed using Content Analysis. The Emotion dimension reveals affective experiences before, during, and after games; Aesthetics covers perceptions regarding the court's appearance and maintenance; Ethics explores dilemmas and conduct both on and off the court; and Spectacle involves inspiration from idols and consumption associated with the sport. The Educational dimension acts as an integrating axis, promoting a holistic understanding of the phenomenon. The results indicate that the practice in this context transcends the sport itself, incorporating emotional, aesthetic, ethical, and spectacular aspects, which reinforces its sociocultural importance. It is concluded that the 5Es model is a useful analytical tool for investigating the multifaceted sociocultural dynamics of sport in public spaces, offering insights into user needs and the challenges related to the management and promotion of community leisure practices in these environments.
