Towards an analysis of contemporary sport

Abstract

This essay is grounded in conceptual reflections on sport developed within the scientific field—particularly in the sociology of sport—as well as in the enduring notions of sport constructed in society. Based on this, the essay aims to present a proposal for understanding sport through an analytical model that enables to interpret its caracheteristics in the contemporary context. This model is composed of five dimensions: emotion, esthetics, ethics, entertainment, and education. The analytical model we propose serves as a tool that may contribute to the analysis of sport in contemporary times, avoiding a restricted understanding centered on biological and health-related aspects, as is often observed in physical education programs. In this way, the model broadens the interpretative horizon of sport, offering theoretical foundations for contemporary socio-cultural analyses.

Author Biography

Wanderley Marchi Júnior, Universidade Federal do Paraná

Full Professor at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), he holds a degree in Physical Education from UNESP (1987), a Master’s (1994) and PhD (2001) from UNICAMP, and a postdoctoral degree in the Sociology of Sport from West Virginia University (2012). His work focuses on Physical Education with an emphasis on the Sociology of Sport, addressing themes such as sport, volleyball, history, and physical education. He is part of the graduate programs in Physical Education and Social Sciences at UFPR and coordinates CEPELS (Research Center on Sport, Leisure, and Society), registered with CNPq. He served as president of ALESDE (2014–2018) and has been editor for major international journals in the field. He is also a researcher at the Sports Intelligence Research Institute/UFPR.
