The business diversification of Club Atlético Peñarol implied its link with the Uruguayan Rugby Union through a Sociedad Anónima Deportiva, with the aim of generating a process aimed at the professionalisation of a group of athletes from the national rugby team, who represented the first champion of the Super League of the Americas Rugby League. The article proposes a series of conceptualisations and analyses from social and cultural studies on sport, based on an interview with the URU's development manager and 22 players from the squad, which reveal how local legislation and state support contributed to the success of the franchise. The third section of the article is also concerned with conceptualising how the ethos of the rugby player is constructed in Uruguay, through surveys that provide data on neighbourhood and educational background, as well as beliefs about gender and other aspects of the identity of Peñarol rugby players.
