Abstract

This article analyzes the path that Uruguay is taking regarding the possibility for athletes to remain in the formal education system while developing in sports, both in formative stages and in high performance (i.e., pursuing a dual career). To address this, four key areas are proposed: (a) conceptual frameworks, (b) an overview of the legal contexts, definitions, and concepts reflected within them, (c) existing sports career support actions, and (d) an analysis of the weaknesses and strengths to continue building the dual career (DC) framework. The importance of developing a culturally relevant model is emphasized, which, while considering international reference models, reflects the specificities of regional contexts. The progress made so far in career support actions and legal frameworks indicates that the topic is becoming more visible in the country. It is important to continue contributing to the construction of networks that integrate the actions identified. Finally, it is necessary to recognize student-athletes and working athletes from a rights-based perspective.
