The “deterritorialization” in the field of sport is perhaps one of the most striking features in modern sport. And for Uruguay this is not a new phenomenon, as “migration” is part of the national culture and have, among other consequences, strong imprint on the sport organization and the meaning given to it. This work is a breakthrough research that has three major objectives. First, to present a conceptual framework as a reference to understand the concept of skilled migration associated with the world of sport, its typology and an approximation of the reasons that lead an athlete to migrate. Second, to describe some characteristics of the Uruguayan case, in particular as regards its most popular sport, soccer. And third, to review some of the possible effects, both positive and negative, that occur in the countries from which they are originated.
