Abstract

The article presents the results of an investigation carried out on television broadcasts of the Chilean national football team matches in the process of classification to 2010 South Africa World Cup. In the framework of what has been called mediatized football, such transmissions reinforce a discourse on national identity, in a conservative matrix sense, pointing to the possibility of the validity of national essences in the context of the mediatization and globalization. Such discursive operation is articulated and geared to economic interests and market that are currently the hegemonic character of the industry of football at global and regional levels.
