Abstract

The study aimed to describe the consolidation path of the Associations of Parents and Friends of Exceptional People (APAEs) as Basic Education Schools, Special Education Modality in the State of Paraná, Brazil, as well as identify formative characteristics of Physical Education and sport in this context. This is a qualitative study with documentary and historical characteristics. To systematize the research, we consulted relevant legislation, resolutions, instructions, and information, as well as curricular documents related to Physical Education in Special Education. The integration of these schools into the Paraná state education system can be considered a significant victory and an example to be followed by other states. The conclusion is that there is a gradual appreciation of people with disabilities in society, especially those of school age. Sports, both as part of the Physical Education curriculum and as an extracurricular activity, play a fundamental role in the process of social inclusion for students with various disabilities. In Paraná, the privilege of learning and practicing sports in schools is observed, as an environment universally recognized as a place of development and belonging.
