ABSTRACT
The study of some scorpions belonging to the genus Bothriurus, collected in the region of Grajau in the state of Maranhão, Brazil, showed that they are, closely allied to the species Bothriurus rochai Mello- Leitão. Taking into account the environmental differences between the very arid « Caatinga » type formation inhabited by the typical form of Bothriurus rochai, and the rather humid conditions in the area of Grajau, a new geographical sub-species is proposed here. The discovery of this new locality for the genus Bothriurus is important because it represents a western extension of the range of distribution of the genus in this region of Brazil, thus placing the bothriurids within the global Amazonian region as defined by EITEN (1974).
