Mary Wollstonecraft's response to Kant: on women's understanding and marriage in the eighteenth century

Abstract

This article aims to discuss the representation of women through the feeling of beauty, in addition to presenting the misogyny existing in Kant’s arguments, which indicates the sexist European culture of this period. To this end, the works Observations on the feeling of the Beautiful and the Sublime, Anthropology from a pragmatic point of view and Metaphysics of Morals are mainly used. However, according to Mary Wollstonecraft, a counterpoint is proposed to the representation of female understanding and marriage, according to the Kantian perspective, based on a discussion of the work A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. It is therefore a question of affirming the incoherence of the propositions presented regarding the rational ineptitude of women and the necessary submission required in marriage.

É Professora Adjunta no Instituto de Ciências Humanas e Sociais da Universidade Federal de Rondonópolis e docente permanente no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Filosofia da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso. Doutora em Estética Contemporânea pela Universidade de São Paulo; Mestre em Estética e Filosofia da Arte; Bacharel e Licenciada em Filosofia pela Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto. Pós-doutora em Estética e Filosofia da arte pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, tendo se debruçado sobre a obra de Rosana Paulino a partir da cosmopercepção amefricana. Pós-doutora em Educação pela Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso, onde tratou do Cinema Negro na sua interface com o conhecimento,a identidade e educação estética no Brasil. Participa da Associação Brasileira de Estética (http://abrestetica.org.br/); da International Association for Aesthetics (https://iaaesthetics.org); assim como atua junto aos Grupos de Trabalho: Filosofia e Raça; e Estética da Associação Nacional de Pós-graduação em Filosofia - ANPOF.
