The meanings of dignity in Immanuel Kant’s work

The aim of this paper is to present an understanding of the different meanings of the Kantian idea of dignity, based on a tripartite division: (a) dignity of being happy; (b) human dignity; (c) non-personified dignity. The argument is based on the book Kant on human dignity, by Oliver Sensen, and the division between the traditional and contemporary paradigms of dignity. Later, the paper moves away from the author’s interpretation, since the understanding defended here is that his reading of Kantian dignity encompasses only the first meaning presented above. In this sense, the article is divided into three topics: Starting with the Critiques, it presents how the dignity of being happy is close to the traditional paradigm of dignity. It then addresses the division between dignity and market price, present in the 1780s, in texts of practical philosophy. Finally, it presents non-personified dignity based on the Metaphysics of morals.
