Author Guidelines

GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS

1. Types of Contributions Accepted

Studia Kantiana accepts the following types of contributions:

• Original articles: unpublished research papers on the philosophy of Immanuel Kant
• Book reviews: critical analyses of recent works related to Kantian philosophy
• Translations: translations of primary texts into Portuguese

All contributions must address exclusively themes related to the philosophy of Immanuel Kant and the selected theme for the volume in question.

2. Submission Requirements

2.1. Author qualifications

Only submissions from authors who hold a doctoral degree or are regularly enrolled in a doctoral programme will be accepted.

2.2. Languages accepted

The journal accepts contributions in the following languages: Portuguese, English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.

2.3. Originality

Submitted works must be original and unpublished, and cannot be under evaluation by another journal. Otherwise, the author must provide justification in the "Comments to the Editor" section.

2.4. Text length

• Articles: should not exceed 14,000 words, including bibliographical references and notes.
• Book reviews: should not exceed 4,500 words, including bibliographical references and notes.

2.5. Submission

Articles and book reviews must be submitted electronically through the journal's website: https://revistas.ufpr.br/studiakantiana

3. Manuscript Preparation

3.1. Basic format

Texts must be presented in:

• Line spacing: single
• Font: Times New Roman, size 12
• File format: Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, or RTF

3.2. Mandatory elements

Articles must be accompanied by:

1. a) Title: in the original language of the contribution and in English
2. b) Abstract: in the original language of the contribution and in English, containing between 75 and 150 words
3. c) Keywords: six keywords in the original language of the contribution and in English, for bibliographical indexing purposes
4. d) Book reviews: must present the complete reference of the work analysed at the beginning of the text

3.3. Affiliations and author information

Manuscripts must include the following information about the author(s):

• Full name
• Institutional affiliation (university, department, city, country)
• Contact e-mail
• ORCID 

Important: To ensure anonymity in the peer review process, this information should only be provided in the appropriate fields of the submission system, and not in the body of the manuscript.

3.4. Instructions for Manuscript Anonymisation 

1. Remove all personally identifying information from the main text, including:
• Author name(s).
• Institutional or departmental affiliations.
• Email addresses and other contact details.
• Acknowledgements and funding statements.
2. Replace self-references with neutral terms such as “Author(s)” or “Previous Study.”
• Example: instead of “As we demonstrated in Silva et al. (2020)”, write “As demonstrated in a previous study (Author, 2020)”.
3. Ensure the file metadata does not contain personal or institutional information.
• Check Document Properties and remove personal details.
4. Avoid indirect identifiers that may reveal the authors’ identity, such as:
• Specific field sites, unique project names, or recognisable institutional details.
5. Provide all author details, acknowledgements and funding information only in the designated fields of the journal’s online submission form, at the time of submission.

4. Citation and Reference Guidelines

4.1. Citations of Kant's works

All citations of Kant's works must follow the Akademie Ausgabe standard, using the format:

Abbreviation, AA (Volume): page[n]

Example: MpVt, AA 08: 264 (i.e., page 264 of the 8th volume of the Academy edition of the work Über das Mißlingen aller philosophischen Versuche in der Theodicee).

4.2. Citations of other authors

References to authors throughout the article must follow the following scheme:

(AUTHOR'S SURNAME, date) or (AUTHOR'S SURNAME, date, p. page)

Examples: (DESCARTES, 1979) or (DESCARTES, 1979, p. 64)

Different titles by the same author published in the same year shall be identified by a letter after the date.

Examples: (PLATO, 1989a), (PLATO, 1989b)

4.3. Footnotes

Footnotes must be substantive in nature, limited to the essential minimum, and indicated by Arabic numerals in ascending order.

4.4. List of bibliographical references

Bibliographical references shall be presented at the end of the article, listed in alphabetical order, strictly observing the sequence and punctuation of the following guidelines:

Book: SURNAME, Name (abbreviated). Title in italics: subtitle. Edition number, if not the first edition. Place of publication: Publisher, Year.

Edited volume: SURNAME, Name (abbreviated). Title of essay. In: SURNAME, Name (abbreviated) of editor(s). Title of edited volume in italics: subtitle. Edition number, if not the first edition. Place of publication: Publisher, Year.

Journal article: SURNAME, Name (abbreviated). Title of article. Journal name in italics, place of publication, volume and issue number, page range of article, publication period, Year.

Dissertations and theses: SURNAME, Name (abbreviated). Title in italics. Place. Total number of pages. Academic degree and field of study [Dissertation (Master's) or Thesis (Doctoral)]. Institution where presented, Year.

Electronic documents: SURNAME, Name (abbreviated). (Year). Title in italics [Online]. Producer. Available at: [URL]. Accessed: [date].

5. Mandatory Declarations

All submitted manuscripts must include the following declarations:

5.1. Conflict of interest

Authors must declare any conflicts of interest that may influence the results or interpretation of the work.

5.2. Funding

Authors must provide information on all funding sources that supported the research, including funding agencies, grant numbers, and scholarships.

Example of declaration: "This research was funded by [Agency Name], grant no. [number]."

5.3. Ethical approval (when applicable)

If the work involves research with human subjects, animal experimentation, or access to sensitive data, authors must declare approval by a competent ethics committee and provide the approval number.

5.4. Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (when applicable)

If generative artificial intelligence tools have been used in preparing the manuscript, authors must declare: - The tool used (name and version) - The specific purpose of use - The extent of use (in which parts of the manuscript)

Example of declaration: "The authors used ChatGPT (GPT-4) for grammatical revision of the English text. All argumentative content was developed entirely by the authors."

6. Supplementary Material

The journal accepts supplementary material that complements the content of the article, such as:

• Additional tables or figures
• Appendices
• Transcriptions of primary documents
• Supplementary data

Supplementary material must be submitted in separate files at the time of submission and will be made available online together with the published article, when relevant.

7. Reproduction Rights

7.1. Use of third-party material

If the manuscript includes material protected by copyright (extensive quotations, images, tables, graphs, or other third-party content), authors must:

• Obtain prior authorisation from copyright holders
• Include appropriate attributions and credits
• Provide a copy of the authorisation to the journal, when requested

7.2. Quotations and paraphrasing

All direct quotations must be presented in quotation marks and properly referenced. Paraphrasing of other authors' ideas must also be appropriately cited.

7.3. Anti-plagiarism policy

Authors must guarantee the originality of submitted texts. The journal uses anti-plagiarism software to verify all submitted manuscripts (Ithenticate 2.0). If any plagiarism is detected, the manuscript will be automatically rejected.

8. Editorial Process

8.1. Acknowledgement of receipt

Authors will be notified of the receipt of contributions through the submission system.

8.2. Preliminary evaluation

The editorial team will carry out a preliminary evaluation of manuscripts within 15 days to verify whether they meet the journal's basic requirements and the theme of the volume.

8.3. Peer review

Articles approved in the preliminary evaluation will be submitted to peer review using a double-blind system, ensuring anonymity for both authors and reviewers. Each article will receive two assessments from external specialists who may:

1. a) Recommend publication without substantial alterations b) Recommend publication subject to revisions c) Reject publication

Reviewers have up to three months to issue their assessment.

In the event of substantial disagreement between the two reviewers' assessments regarding the recommendation for publication, the manuscript will be sent to a third reviewer for adjudication.

8.4. Revisions

For articles accepted with recommendation for revisions, authors will have between 5 and 20 days to make the requested changes and submit the revised manuscript.

8.5. Editorial decision

The final decision regarding the publication of articles rests with the Editors based on the reviewers' assessments. The decision regarding the publication of book reviews rests exclusively with the Editors.

8.6. Copy-editing

The Editors reserve the right to suggest formal modifications to the author in order to adapt contributions to the journal's editorial and graphic standards.

8.7. Responsibility

The statements and concepts expressed in signed articles are the sole responsibility of their authors.

9. Copyright and Licensing

Authors retain copyright of their works and grant Studia Kantiana the right of first publication. Published articles are available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0).

This licence allows third parties to share and adapt the content, provided that proper attribution is given to the authors and the original publication in the journal, a link to the licence is included, and any modifications are indicated.

Authors have the right to reuse their works in other publications, including archiving the post-print (final PDF version from the publisher) in institutional or thematic repositories.

10. Fees

The journal does not charge submission or publication fees (Article Processing Charges - APC).
