Comic books as a pedagogical resource
a didactic sequence for teaching about arboviruses

This study analyzed the application of comic books (CBs) as a pedagogical resource for teaching about the arboviruses dengue, Zika, and chikungunya to a 7th-grade class in Elementary School in Rondonópolis-MT, Brazil. The proposal was structured as a didactic sequence based on Zabala (1998), including activities for hypothesis generation, reading CBs, original production, and reflective assessment. The research, which was qualitative and descriptive, allowed for the observation of student engagement, their productions, and their perceptions of learning. The results showed that the use of CBs favored the comprehension of scientific concepts, the critical appropriation of knowledge, and student agency, connecting theory, practice, and daily life. Collective reading and the production of their own narratives stimulated discussions about family experiences with arboviruses, consolidating meaningful learning and broadening awareness about prevention. Based on the dimensions proposed by Zabala (2010), it was identified that the CBs significantly covered the three axes of the educational process. In the conceptual dimension, students demonstrated understanding of symptoms and preventive measures, especially for dengue and chikungunya. In the procedural dimension, they represented practices for eliminating mosquito breeding sites and utilized visual and narrative resources to communicate knowledge. In the attitudinal dimension, they revealed values of solidarity, care for family members, and social responsibility regarding arboviruses. Despite difficulties such as resistance to writing or literacy limitations, it is concluded that CBs constitute an effective resource for integrating science, language, and local reality, promoting engagement, creativity, and meaningful learning in Elementary School.
